They say ’content is the king’ these days. Hasmukh, the Netflix original web series is seriously challenging the notion.

First of all “Hasmukh” should have been “Hansmukh” but then there are many things that should have not been messed up in the series. In a nutshell, a small town standup comedian who needs to kill (literally) before his each gig is the plot of the series.

Comedy, drama, thrill, suspense, violence, glamour, obscenity and what not! You name it and all the ingredients of a masala success are present. They have mixed it well but unfortunately forgot to cook it and hence each ingredient is there with its own uniqueness but the final dish is more like a leftover of everything that is thrown and gets mixed in the bin.

Vir Das, Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Ravi Kishan, Raza Murad. You read these names and you get excited to watch a great show but sadly all of them have been greatly wasted here. You watch the series and you will know how much a good director is needed to get the best out of the story and the characters. More or less same story, same characters, improved plots, better dialogues, better treatment and a great director and the same show could have done wonders. Imagine the show being directed by Anurag Kashyap and you will understand how much potential the content had and how badly it has been ruined.

You must have heard Vir Das doing standup comedy. After listening to his gigs in this series you will surely ask whether it was done intentionally to bring more traffic to his others shows on Netflix or what? But to be frank, even the last positioned comedian in any comedy show could have written better jokes than the ones used in this series. Why were the jokes so bad? That’s a better case for the police to work on and you really wish the actual culprit is punished for this heinous act.

As the series end, you find yourself in a strange silence that screams and asks you – “Kya hua? Koi marr gaya kya?”

Too much criticism I guess but what to do! Too much expectation can only cause this big a disappointment.

Sigh!
