The word Malang is used to denote the Sufi Faqirs who are oblivious of their surroundings. It’s a very interesting word since the same word is used for someone with higher state of consciousness as well as for those who have gone all bonkers.

Unfortunately for the movie the second usage of the word is more fitting. Mohit Suri wanted to make an extraordinary movie but the end result turned out to be a disaster.

The movie is about two young pseudo rebels, trying to break-free of the stereotypes of society, in a very stereotypical manner. Good cop-bad cop duo who turned out to be quite at the opposite ends at the end. Pseudo spiritual songs with lyrics such as “I found me in you”, “lost everything and found you”, “let’s find some another world” etc. could not add more to a dead plot. All in all, there was a nothing surprising in the twists and turns in the movie.

You cannot expect any extraordinary performance in such an average movie. I am hoping that like Disha Patni, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kunal Khemu are invested in their bodies by choice and didn’t work hard to build their physique particularly for this movie. They must have been made to believe that this is a career defining role for them and they have tried a lot to make it so. So, you can’t really blame them for the final outcome. The actors are very much dependent on the script and the direction and in this case good actors have been underutilized for sure.

It’s high time to see the bigger picture and act more responsibly. Movie makers will have to stop making movies with the idea of pseudo rebellion. Leaving your job, finding less value in your relations, wearing funky clothes, smoking, taking drugs & alcohol, visiting some cliche tourist spots, doing some adventurous activities, trying to copy to live like a hippy doesn’t make you a rebel or a “malang”. Actions don’t decide your state of mind but the state of mind decides your actions.

Actions without understanding are fatal. It’s worse than living a conditioned chained ordinary life.

Nowadays, movies have become like institutions. People don’t just watch a movie for the sake of it. They live their unfulfilled lives via them. They relate with stories, they relate with the characters, they get happy to see someone doing some extraordinary stuff on the big screen that they are not able to do. For 2-3 hours, they become the character itself and live a life that is not possible for them in reality.

People learn from the movies and they do carry some takeaway from each movie. This makes the job of the movie makers very much important. You can’t misled people with a content that can prove hazardous for them. Movies are an impactful medium and the moviemakers have great powers in their hands and they should always be reminded of the words that Spiderman said – “With great power comes great responsibility”.
